Mercado de San Miguel |
During my first visit to Spain 2 years ago, I stumbled upon this fantastic food market while wandering around at night.
Mercado de San Miguel is a tapas market, and serves a huge variety of Spanish tapas under one roof.
It is an ideal place for visitors to Spain to discover the various local gastronomic delights in a safe environment.
That's a leg of cured ham, they shave it for Jamon Iberica! |
No visit to Spain in complete without a taste of Jamon Iberica - this is ham from the cured leg of Iberian pigs. The taste is out of this world. Either eat it directly or on a slice of bread.
straight from the bottle |
Spanish champagne! |
Spanish wine is amazing. I think they guzzle most it themselves and that's why nothing gets exported to our shores. Simply head to any bar serving wine, and get a glass. Then you can walk around with the glass in hand while sampling other tapas.
Arroza Negra - Black Paella of which the black is actually squid ink |
Paella is a Spanish rice dish. By the way, if a shop advertises Paella with photos never buy it. This is because they will be serving paella from a microwave. Real Paella is cooked and served on the spot.
There are different varieties of Mozzarella Cheese with toppings like Jamon, squid, calamari etc
And if you like seafood, they will grill, fry or boil it for you.
this must be a pokemon! |
So the strategy here is to head up to the bar counter, buy a drink and then start grabbing as much tapas as you can. After all, the servings are small and there is so much to taste!
This is a beer, and a tapas on a bar counter, which constitutes happiness for a Spaniard.
Getting there
